Music education can transform lives beyond just learning an instrument. In this episode, I reconnect with my high school band director, Jarrett Lipman, who made a lasting impact on my high school years and beyond. We discuss how structured activities like band can help young people build community, find purpose, and develop leadership skills.
Texas marching band culture demands extreme discipline, with students dedicating months to rigorous rehearsals and countless hours of practice. This intensity builds qualities like resilience and perseverance, while also developing skills like teamwork and communication—lessons that reach far beyond the marching field.
Jarrett shares his perspective on leadership as a skill that can grow over time, even when it’s hidden in students. We also touch on how his teaching now balances excellence with well-being, and why kindness remains one of the most important lessons.
Reflecting on my own journey from anxious freshman to band leader, I’m reminded how powerful it is to have someone who sees you not just for who you are now, but for the person you’re capable of becoming.
